IB Boot Camp

June 12 | 1:30 pm - 6:00 pm | Nashville Music City Center

Converting a traditional building into a smart building can be a daunting task; transforming a portfolio or campus is an even greater challenge.

While the benefits of energy and natural resource conservation, operational efficiency, an enhanced occupant experience, sustainability and financial optimization are compelling, often even the most experienced commercial, corporate and institutional real estate organizations do not know where to start.

Over the last eight years, this Boot Camp has provided professionals a step-by-step guide on where to begin. Defining the attributes of a smart building, developing a comprehensive strategy, assembling a smart building team and establishing building cyber guidelines are just a few of the topics to be discussed

Many of the individuals and organizations who have participated in this Boot Camp have gone on to develop some of the most comprehensive and sophisticated smart buildings, portfolios and campuses in the world. For anyone considering the design and development of a smart building strategy, this is a must attend event.

The Journey Begins – Developing a Comprehensive SMART BUILDING STRATEGY
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 1:45 pm - 2:00 pm    Location: Room 207A
For 40 years, we have managed buildings in a very analog way. We installed siloed building systems from different vendors that were never intended to integrate communications, data exchange or unified controls. With the advent of IT expansion into the industry, building networks, smart edge devices, improved controllers, evolving building operating systems and a multitude of applications, the concept of a ‘smart building’ has certainly evolved and the journey requires a comprehensive strategy. This session will lay out that foundation, which includes vision, an internal team, external resources, goals & objectives, budgets, timelines and more.

REcalibrating the Conversation – Bringing the Focus to USE CASES vs. Technology
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 2:00 pm - 2:15 pm    Location: Room 207A
Cloud, IoT, mobile apps, operating systems, middleware, analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, dashboards and cybersecurity are just some of the categories that make up a noisy marketplace for decision-makers. Hundreds of systems and technology components include thousands of features. For those new to the concept of smart buildings, this ever-growing marketplace can be confusing and frustrating. The best way to bring clarity is to focus on real-life use cases driven by business objectives and practical desired outcomes. This segment will reorient the audience to a library of use-cases which are easy to understand—and away from the confusing technology, systems and features conversation.

Building a Partnership – IT's ROLE in the Development of a Smart Building Strategy
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 2:45 pm - 3:10 pm    Location: Room 207A
Back when early ‘smart buildings’ consisted of disparate, analog, single-purpose buildings systems such as HVAC, lighting and access controls, there was no need for the Information Technology (IT) team to be involved. Fast forward 25 years and the story is a bit more complicated. Building networks, operating systems, application stacks, mobile platforms, enterprise integration and cybersecurity are all issues that require the attention and experience of IT professionals. Now, the key to a successful smart building strategy is establishing an early relationship between development, facilities, engineering, asset management, energy, sustainability and IT. In this segment, attendees will hear from others who have brought IT onto the team.

Smart Building Connectivity – Best Practices for Designing a Future Proof Base Building Network
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 3:10 pm - 3:35 pm    Location: Room 207A
Defining the building network architecture is one of the most important decisions to be made when developing a smart building strategy. The concept is simple: put an IP-based network in a building to connect (and ultimately manage) all the disparate building systems—and possibly deliver digital services to guests and tenants. While the concept is straightforward, there are a wide range of opinions on exactly how to do it. Cloud, IoT, edge devices, cyber, business continuity, integration, segregation and performance all come into play, and now 5G, CBRS and other emerging wireless technologies are poised to require yet another shift for the wireless network infrastructure inside smart buildings. This session will present best practices for a base building network strategy and explore the impact of the next generation of telecommunications on this smart building foundation.

Unleashing Extraordinary Opportunities – Leveraging BIG DATA & ANALYTICS in Buildings
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 3:35 pm - 3:55 pm    Location: Room 207A
One of the first things people experience on the smart building journey after they begin to attach devices to the network is the discovery of data. Building system hardware and electromechanical devices in buildings all produce data in some form. While older systems offer smaller data sets and are harder to extract information from, new systems that are network-ready offer mountains of potentially valuable information. Given the enormity of the voluminous amount of data generated by building systems old and new, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding and strategy. This enlightening segment will provide a good foundation for big data & analytics in buildings.

Building CYBERSECURITY 101 – The First Step in an Important Journey
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 4:15 pm - 4:45 pm    Location: Room 207A
One of the biggest topics in the smart building community over the last five years has been cybersecurity. Whether it is an old, analog, unconnected building or the newest state-of-the-art connected campus, cybersecurity remains a top priority. Complex networks, unsecure equipment, multiple layers of software, as well as basic system governance all lead to breach scenarios for building owners and operators. This extensive segment will set the foundation for smart building cybersecurity and will provide attendees with a better understanding of the technical, operational, organizational and legal aspects of a cybersecurity program. Anyone who is in the process of developing a smart building program cannot afford to miss this conversation.

The Next Chapter in Smart Buildings – Delivering the Digital OCCUPANT EXPERIENCE
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 4:45 pm - 5:15 pm    Location: Room 207A
It started with the idea of adjusting the room temperature from a mobile phone, followed by getting through security using your phone. Then, 24 months ago, the capability list started to grow bigger each day. Open the parking gate, call the elevator, order a latte, schedule a yoga class, turn on the lights, turn down the heat, schedule a conference room, report a leaky faucet; new applications keep popping up. Now that building occupants want to control their building much like they control their rideshare experience with UBER and Lyft, dozens of companies have entered the market. The Occupant Experience has moved the smart building conversation to the front of the house and is now a part of every smart building discussion.

Quantifying the Smart Building VALUE PROPOSITION – Hard Dollars & Intangibles
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 5:15 pm - 5:30 pm    Location: Room 207A
There are many different reasons to embark on a smart building project. Resource conservation, operational efficiency, enhanced occupant experience, sustainability and financial optimization of the real estate asset are the five primary goals which have been identified by the market. While many believe intelligent, connected buildings are intrinsically good, financial drivers remain the number one reason to embark on a smart building strategy. It requires time and thought, but identifying legitimate business-based value propositions and quantifying financial impacts will increase the chance for success. In this segment, attendees will hear firsthand how to translate smart building goals, objectives and strategies into dollars and cents results.
