CRE Cybersecurity Forum

June 12 | 8:00 am - 11:45 am | Nashville Music City Center

Over the past decade, weaponized code delivered by malicious individuals has evolved to be one of the greatest threats to our country’s welfare and economy. Cybercrime affects everyone, including individuals, businesses, organizations and government. It was inevitable that cyber threats would eventually find vulnerable Commercial and Corporate Real Estate targets, both at the enterprise and infrastructure level. Cybersecurity as it impacts the built environment continues to be one of the most requested topics in our industry.

To make matters worse, the threat of breaches increases as advanced technologies such as AI, Machine Learning, IoT and others become more integrated into our Commercial and Corporate Real Estate assets and daily activities.

There are four distinct areas that building professionals must consider: 1) traditional IT cyber threats; 2) protection of real estate operational and transaction data; 3) smart, connected buildings; and 4) physical security.

The CRE Cybersecurity Forum will bring together industry thought leaders to address the most high-impact cyber threats and leverage their experience and knowledge to set benchmarks for cybersecurity strategy. Much of the content for this Forum will be developed from the ongoing work of the Real Estate Cyber Consortium (RECC).

Leading the Way – An Introduction to the REAL ESTATE CYBER CONSORTIUM (RECC)
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 8:10 am - 8:35 am    Location: Room 209A
The foundation for the Real Estate Cyber Consortium (RECC) was laid five years ago, when 40 Commercial and Corporate Real Estate organizations met privately at Realcomm |IBcon to begin the discussions surrounding cybersecurity as relates to the built environment. The following year, the conversation was opened up to everyone at our first Real Estate Cybersecurity Forum. Over the last 24 months, some of the most innovative and noteworthy companies in the industry have come together to form the RECC. Focused on leveraging insight and experience, this group set a course to be the foundation for the industry on cybersecurity; sharing best practices, case studies and guidelines with a goal to influence the entire supply chain to embed security into their products and practices.

Developing a Comprehensive BUILDING CYBERSECURITY PROGRAM – How to Get Started
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 8:40 am - 9:05 am    Location: Room 209A
Every company is at a different part of the cybersecurity journey. Most Real Estate organizations begin by focusing on enterprise related issues which can impact operations. Recently, with the increase in cyber-attacks on the built environment, more companies have begun the task of securing the building and all its systems. While some knowledge can be garnered from critical infrastructure experiences, protecting buildings from cyber threats is a relatively new phenomenon. This session will provide insight on what a comprehensive Building Cybersecurity Program might look like. In addition to presenting the foundational plan, some Monday morning advice on ‘where to begin’ will also be provided.

Cybersecurity Incidents – CIOs Share Discovery and Responses
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 9:10 am - 9:40 am    Location: Room 209A
It seems each and every day that there is a news story reporting on a cyber breach of some type. From international claims on the potential vulnerabilities of Huawei equipment to malware shutting down local governments, the risks continue to grow. While the Commercial and Corporate Real Estate industry is susceptible to these general types of risks, we also need to be ready to meet the threats directed at our buildings. While our Cyber breaches do not necessarily make international headlines, they are important and deserve our attention. Given that it is difficult to identify and distribute information about these risks, this panel will discuss and explain actual cyber incidents they have experienced within the built environment.

Setting the Bar Higher – A Review of RECC Smart Building Cybersecurity BEST PRACTICES
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 9:55 am - 10:25 am    Location: Room 209A
Real Estate developers, owners and operators are realizing the immense benefits of smart buildings, and consequently the adoption rate increases daily. With next generation technologies such as the IoT and 5G/CBRS being added to the smart building discussion, an even more complex technical ecosystem is emerging. This complexity also creates a cybersecurity vulnerability that is unprecedented. In anticipation of this risk, a working group of the RECC has diligently begun formulating cybersecurity best practices for the built environment. These guidelines are designed to set a foundation and to leverage the experience of thought leaders for the benefit of the industry at large.

Selecting Secure VENDORS – Tightening the Smart Building Cybersecurity Supply Chain
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 10:30 am - 11:00 am    Location: Room 209A
The building automation, smart building and IoT-enabled building supply chain spans multiple decades and is represented by thousands of vendors and millions of different devices. ‘Dumb’ analog devices, file servers and hard wires to the cloud, smart edge devices and the next generation of wireless create endless potential vulnerabilities in this interconnected world. For this reason, it is critical that a large-scale effort be made to engage the solution providers to develop secure devices, systems, methodologies and policies. Hardware and software providers alike must be focused on developing products that meet stringent cyber requirements. The journey continues to secure the smart building technology supply chain.

Next Generation Cyber – IT’s Role in Securing Smart Buildings
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 11:05 am - 11:35 am    Location: Room 209A
The discussion over the last five years has been, “who is going to take the lead in securing our buildings from an equipment manufacturing standpoint?" The industry has been aggressively reaching out to the traditional companies with not much response. The equipment in question could be 20 years old and never designed with cybersecurity in mind. Recently, IT providers such as Intel and Microsoft have entered the discussion and are proposing very sophisticated concepts and technologies more in line with IT governance standards. So the question begs, who will secure the building, traditional manufactures or new IT entrants. This dynamic session will provide insight from some of the leaders in the industry poised to reset the bar.
