CIO Roundtable

June 12 | 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm | Nashville Music City Center

Elevating Commercial Real Estate technology strategy education for well over a decade, the Realcomm CIO Roundtable has become the premier annual event that attracts the best and brightest CIOs in the commercial real estate industry.

The roles and responsibilities of CIOs have expanded into other areas such as marketing, smart facilities, enhanced occupant experience, human resources, digital transformation and more. An important goal of the Roundtable is to be able to provide and foster an environment where CIOs can learn about the latest technologies, collaborate with peers and leverage knowledge in this fast-changing world.

Roundtable content is developed with the cooperation of our three co-chairmen in conjunction with the entire Advisory Council, resulting in programming that represents the most progressive, cutting-edge and relevant topics.

This highly focused event addresses issues including digital transformation, change management, organizational alignment, cyber, , ProP Tech investments, new innovations and IT strategy as well as a host of new topics identified each year by the Advisory Council.

Most importantly, this by-invitation event provides an annual opportunity to reset the benchmarks for IT related issues for the industry and provide an efficient distribution of information, which keeps Real Estate IT strategies current to mitigate risk and accelerate the adoption of new innovative technologies.

Drivers of Innovation – Meet the CIO Roundtable SPONSORS
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 2:15 pm - 2:45 pm    Location: Room 209A
There are many forces that shape the direction and velocity of innovation. Navigating changing cultures, operating models, business processes—and humans in general—is not an easy task. When you look at the innovation eco-system, solution providers are typically the ones driving innovation and change. They see an economic opportunity to provide a technology or service to improve a process and take the risk to create it. Solution providers are also good barometers of the market. They talk to thousands of people and change direction based on market feedback. This segment of the CIO Roundtable is an opportunity for CIOs to hear from the most successful, engaged and thoughtful companies who will share their perspective on the industry.

BREAKOUT SESSION: MAINTENANCE vs. INNOVATION – A Discussion on Benchmarking and Budgets
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm    Location: Room 205C
The daily routine of a Real Estate CIO includes many traditional IT tasks and responsibilities. Maintaining servers, keeping software platforms up to date, developing cyber programs, managing cloud providers and implementing data storage strategies are among the items on the CIO’s to do list. In addition to maintaining the technical lifeblood of the company, the CIO is also responsible for looking forward and seeking new innovations. How much innovation makes its way into an IT strategy? Benchmarking against other companies and a review of the IT budget are good places to start. Creating an environment which has a good balance of maintenance and innovation is key to success. This facilitated breakout session will allow IT leaders to discuss and debate IT budget and performance metrics and participate in a targeted commercial real estate industry survey.

BREAKOUT SESSION: The Convergence of IT, OT and IoT – The CIO's Role in Smart Buildings Expands
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm    Location: Room 205B
The smart building discussion was first introduced to CIOs over 15 years ago. Given the technical and complex nature of smart, connected buildings, the CIO was a logical choice to be included in the discussion, or even drive it. Over the years, smart buildings have continued to evolve and become even more complicated. The introduction of a new layer: the Internet of Things (IoT); a new generation of building communications including wireless; cybersecurity concerns; and occupant experience applications are just some of the technologies affecting decision-making. This facilitated discussion will bring together industry leaders at the forefront of the next generation of smart buildings; they will drive a conversation on the technology developments that are pushing the envelope.

BREAKOUT SESSION: Automating Everything – An Open Discussion on Process Automation, AI/ML, RPA and NextGen Data/Analytics
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm    Location: Room 205A
Raw components of business processes can be found in file cabinets, forms, emails, software platforms, spreadsheets, documents and a wide variety of other forms of communications. While most companies are forced to rethink a process as they consider a new automation solution, it is a rare occasion that a strategic end-to-end overhaul is completed. It is important to look not only at the steps within a micro process, but also all the processes as they relate to each other. This macro perspective will result in maximum efficiency, and in some cases eliminate outdated methods—from AR/AP to leasing and investor reporting—with a focus on effective strategies for designing a comprehensive business process evaluation. This breakout session will allow IT leaders to discuss their experiences related to ‘squeezing the air’ out of a variety of business processes.

BREAKOUT SESSION: Information Technology SKILLS SHORTAGE – Strategies for Maintaining a Strong Team
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm    Location: Room 203
Without great people, a company has nothing. Good ideas are meaningless without a talented and dedicated team of professionals capable of executing on a vision. In today’s marketplace, there are a growing number of issues affecting a company’s ability to attract, train and maintain a productive workforce. A growing shortage of technology and operational professionals, a millennial generation with a new set of working habits and a generation of professionals quickly nearing retirement. When you fast-forward these aligning trends, only a few short years down the road, the result could be a massive talent shortage. It is critical for executive leadership in commercial real estate—an industry that requires a strong work ethic and technical skills—to address this growing concern. This targeted and facilitated breakout session will encourage IT leaders to discuss strategies for meeting the growing talent shortage.

Office owners, retail landlord and even industrial portfolio owners are getting into the flex and underutilized space game. This informative segment will include spirited discussion on flex space consumption and utilization for office, retail and industrial. The biggest question to be answered: Is this a Challenge, Opportunity or Both?

PROPTECH Primer – A Starter Conversation on the State of the Industry
Date: 6/12/2019    Time: 5:20 pm - 5:55 pm    Location: Room 209A
The fourth phase of significant technology investment for the real estate industry began around 2009. Recent estimates indicate $10 billion has been invested in 2018 alone, and over 3,500 companies are now in the space. Despite all this money, focus and energy, we see real estate companies struggling to fully understand the new entrants, and new tech firms are still struggling to understand real estate. Additionally, we have not seen a proportionate number of notable successes or exits, and the ‘start-up’ classification can extend to seven years. In this insightful session, notable VCs and Real Estate PE firms will discuss the status of PropTech for our industry and will present some of the most interesting, new, little-known solutions they’ve come across recently.
