Building Automation, Smart Buildings and IoT – The Journey Continues
In the 1990s, the Internet and the web were becoming mainstream commercial technologies. Smart devices and systems began to appear in buildings, machines, homes and cars, but few standards existed for interoperability among new and already-installed devices. Working from a spare room in Richmond, Virginia, a group of building industry experts and graduates in electrical engineering and computer science gathered to solve the problem. Their approach was to design an open, Internet-based infrastructure to support applications that could be used across a wide variety of systems from different manufacturers. Tridium was founded by these entrepreneurs whose early success was based on a novel technology and a forward-thinking set of early adopters. Today, Jim Bland, President of Tridium, continues that legacy of entrepreneurship and innovation.

U.S. Math & Science Education – A Threat to the American Dream
For the last 100 years, the United States and all it represents has been built on vision, hard work, a willingness to take risk and high educational standards. Many of the jobs that have been created over the last century were based on extraordinary innovation. The radio, television, automobile, airplane, computer, Internet, mobile phone and all the new technologies emerging from Silicon Valley and other tech hubs have created an economic engine and laid the foundation for many ‘American Dreams’. At the core of this innovation are strong math and science skills. Once the envy of the world, the U.S. educational system is now producing abysmal results: 25th in Science and 41st in math globally. We need a national shift in our culture to reverse this trend and bring the United States back to the forefront of math and science education. In the interest of this goal, we will celebrate a group of high school students who—with the help of the Realcomm community—have placed a micro experiment on the International Space Station. This project is an example of what can happen when businesses join in the fight to restore our place in the global education rankings.

ERPs have evolved from a few major business processes to touching almost every single function in a real estate company. The debate includes single stack vs. integrated best of breed, as well as uncovering logical boundaries for an ERP platform. Cloud, mobility, analytics and cyber have also been part of the ongoing discussion. Hear from the industry’s top leaders about the current status and future possibilities of real estate ERPs.

Commercial Real Estate and BLOCKCHAIN – Understanding What Really Matters!
2017 has seen the first, early sprouts of blockchain being used in real estate. Acting as a new transactional infrastructure for a secure, seamless, peer network, it could be poised to impact our world at a larger scale. Integrating this complex technology with the knotty commercial real estate industry is a Gordian knot task. We'll open this discussion with a presentation by Ragnar Lifthrasir on the fundamentals. What can blockchain do that other technology can't? What are the criterion for choosing a blockchain for real estate application? Following Ragnar's presentation, we've assembled a diverse panel of industry practitioners to expand the discussion to topics such as standards, adoption and potential industry disruption.

As more and more of our world moves to the cloud, new and important issues come into play. Network performance, security, data integration and authentication, are just a few. This important session will attempt to determine what the state-of-the-art cloud strategy might look like, while addressing the challenges of the platform. Dealing with the Critical IT SKILLS SHORTAGE – Creative Ways to Build a Team
For the past few years there have been murmurs of an IT skills shortage. Every year the topic seems to intensify. By some estimations, we are short of qualified candidates for nearly one million IT positions in the US, plus 500,000 in operations and facilities. There are many reasons for this shortage ranging from declining interest in math and science in K-12 and college, to a disinterest in the "not so interesting" world of real estate and facilities by younger generations. In order to survive and thrive, various organizations have come up with their own unique strategies to find and train employees while creating and maintaining a culture they feel good about. For anyone struggling with finding skilled employees, this is a session you will not want to miss.

AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES – Is It Time for Building Operators to Pay Attention?
It is amazing what a difference a year makes. People are beginning to realize that AVs are real, AND getting closer than they think. Tesla auto parking, the Uber rollout in Pittsburg and San Francisco, their recent partnership with Daimler, and the flurry of activity in the driverless truck market all indicate that this technology is making steady progress to more mainstream adoption. The implications to the building world are significant: parking strategies, work patterns, office design, traffic flows, building codes, pick-up and drop-off scenarios, insurance, regulation and more. This useful session will include AV experts as well as commercial real estate early adopters discussing the implications and challenges to owner/developers, tenants and technologists.

21st Century Skills – Building a DATA SCIENCE Strategy & Team
Years ago, it was called data analysis, then business intelligence, evolved to big data—and now, data science. At the end of the day it means using data from a number of sources, both internal and external, to bring a new level of granularity and accuracy to recognizing business issues and trends. The truth is, data science done correctly can tell us more about the past, present and possibly help predict the future. We are now on the verge of more real estate organizations committing to the idea of data science. Companies are developing strategies and putting together teams that collect, organize, analyze and draw conclusions from an immense volume of data. This invaluable session will attempt to define data science, identify its capabilities for commercial real estate and share stories on what an effective strategy might look like.

Technology has always been an enabler of change. In recent history, we have seen PCs replace terminals and mobile phones take automation to the streets. Some would argue that this has been incremental change and that transitions were hard, but not totally disruptive. More recently, we've heard a lot about digital transformation. This means literally rethinking everything from the ground up, from how an occupant interacts with the building to how they pay their rent. Layer on top of that the new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain that are poised to potentially change every aspect of real estate. COGNITIVE TECHNOLOGIES in Investment Management Processes – Are We There Yet?
At one time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was little more than a reference in science fiction novels. JP Morgan Chase, BlackRock and Goldman Sachs have recently been investing heavily in developing machine learning applications that allow them to automate manual tasks done by lawyers, loan officers, analysts and back office personnel. Most investment management business processes rely on emails, wet signatures, eSignatures, cutting and pasting and then manual reporting. The good news is that we are now seeing Cognitive Technologies, Machine Learning, Robotic Process Automation and AI automating many of these processes. In this exciting session, we will discuss these new technologies and their impact on Leasing, Legal, Acquisitions, Asset Management, Middle Office, Dispositions, and Document Management functions.

CAPITAL PROJECTS – Bringing Data Driven Precision to the Process
Capital projects make up a major component of a building owner’s strategy. Whether it is a small tenant improvement, or a major retrofit or construction project, there are many moving parts. Historically those “moving parts” were managed using the last generation of automation tools, documents, spreadsheets and email. While these tools provided an improvement from paper, their capability was limited; we now see those old systems giving way to new ones that are innovative, scalable and more effective. Solutions like RFP Delivery, RFP Response, Bid Analysis, Project Management and, in some cases, Accounting Integration – all are part of a process ripe for an efficiency overhaul. This session will feature the industry’s most knowledgeable minds on the topic of next generation capital project automation.

Defining and Executing the DIGITAL CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
Functions such as accounting, property management and lease administration are typically referred to as back office. These are the basics that must be put in place for a real estate company to function. Today, many organizations are looking beyond the traditional IT functions and are anticipating that technology, automation and innovation to deliver an enhanced, i.e. “digital,” customer experience applicable to both internal as well as external customers. In retail, this could involve features such as a mobile shopping app or interactive directories; in the office, it could mean using a phone for access control or human resource interaction. In any event, technology continues to play a role in creating immersive and engaging spaces. This session will explore how industry leaders are approaching this emerging digital customer experience.

Automating the LEASE PROCESS – Many Perspectives, Many Options
The lease process remains one of the cornerstones of owning and operating commercial real estate. Identifying prospects, showing space, signing leases and providing ongoing customer service to tenants are all pieces of the puzzle. There have been numerous attempts to automate the process. First, we saw custom built CRM systems; then a movement toward Salesforce; and recently, companies such as VTS and Hightower (now consolidated into VTS) provided market systems which could also automate the internal lease processes of real estate companies. Today, our industry has a number of different concepts in play; the lease automation conversation is far from over. This insightful session will discuss and debate the merits and challenges of lease automation.

The journey to the cloud has been a long one. First introduced in the late 1990s, the marketplace is now fully embracing the benefits of cloud computing being offered by today’s solution providers. Business continuity, technology upgrades at scale, cyber defense and infrastructure maintenance costs - these are just a few of the justifications for outsourcing this role to these partners. With this transformative shift of responsibility to the cloud providers, the subject of cybersecurity remains front and center. Are they providing state-of-the-art cyber defense? Are they larger targets because of their scale? Could their infrastructure be breached or held for ransom? This enlightening session will include the industry's most notable providers who will present their strategies for keeping their client systems safe.

BUSINESS ALIGNMENT for Technology and Innovation – A Requirement for Success
We've been talking about it for years. It's not about the technology, but rather the business objectives that drive innovation. While the conversations have been loud and constant, there are still many organizations that focus on the technology without clear alignment around business goals. IT’s inclusion in strategy planning is critical to this alignment. For today’s technology executive to be successful, they must be on the front lines—clearly understanding the business and how it is changing. Technology and innovation continue to fundamentally change the way we use and operate real estate, and today’s executive must to be strategic, not tactical.
