Keynote | Martha Heller - The CIO Paradox (more info)
Date: 6/12/2012 Time: 1:25PM - 2:10PM Location: Ballroom D & E
Regardless of industry, most major companies are becoming technology companies. The successful management of information has become so critical to a company’s goals that in many ways, now is the age of the CIO. Yet IT executives are besieged by a host of contradictions: bad technology can bring a company to its knees, but corporate boards rarely employ CIOs; CIOs must keep costs down at the very same time that they drive innovation. CIOs are focused on the future, while they are tethered by technology decisions made in the past. These contradictions form what Martha Heller calls “The CIO Paradox,” a set of conflicting forces that are deeply embedded in governance, staffing, executive expectations, and even corporate culture. Heller, who has spent more than 12 years working with the CIO community, offers guidance to CIOs on how to attack, reverse, or neutralize the paradoxical elements of the their role. In this keynote session, Martha Heller will discuss her book, CIO Paradox, and how, through interviews with a wide array of successful CIOs, she’s helped them level the playing field for IT success and get one step closer to bringing maximum value to their companies.

Today's IT Executive - Businessman First... Technician Second! (more info)
Date: 6/12/2012 Time: 2:25PM - 3:10PM Location: Ballroom D & E
What does it take to be a successful IT executive is one of the most important question to ask. The industry is witnessing a transformation in the skills required to develop and implement a successful strategic IT plan. While technical acumen and knowledge are critical, they are becoming secondary to strong business skills. An IT executive should have the required skills while focusing on making big impacts on the business. Whether one is invited to the annual strategy meeting or just handed a list, this session will cover what it takes to be a successful "business-centric" IT leader.

The Changing Role of a Real Estate IT Executive (more info)
Date: 6/12/2012 Time: 3:25PM - 4:00PM Location: Ballroom D & E
To say the role of the CIO has evolved would be an understatement. Once the keeper of desktops and e-mail, today's CIO is finding themselves more integrated into all the business units within a real estate organization. In addition to the requirement of being a businessman, as discussed in the previous session, the CIO is also required to understand and help develop the "digital" aspect of the business for marketing, leasing, finance, human resources, facilities and sustainability. This session will uncover the changing role of the CIO and how to manage this evolution.

Intelligent Building Analytics - Inch Deep... Mile Wide (more info)
Date: 6/12/2012 Time: 5:30PM - 6:00PM Location: Ballroom D & E
The idea of operating buildings with more technical sophistication is increasing each and every day. The practice of using a flashlight to read a meter is quickly vanishing. The systems required to deliver this next level of sophistication will require a team effort between IT and facilities. Understanding what to do with the enormous amounts of data that can now be collected electronically is critical to success. This session will focus on understanding the power of building system analytics and how the strategy of "Inch Deep... Mile Wide" is producing some extraordinary results.

Included sessions are:
975,000 NYC Buildings – Embracing Innovation and Setting Global Benchmarks (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 8:00AM - 10:30AM Location: Paradise North
If there is one city that is recognized around the globe it is New York City. Known as the epicenter of finance, business, fashion and the arts, it is also known for something else…its buildings. With one of the most iconic skylines in the world, NYC and the surrounding burrows represent some of the newest and oldest buildings in the United States.
The executive in charge, Robert LiMandri, Commissioner for the NYC Buildings department leads an agency with more than 1,200 inspectors, engineers, plan examiners and other professionals whose primary mission is to ensure public safety at 975,000 buildings.
Commissioner LiMandri, whose real estate career includes working with industry leaders such as Real Foundations and Jones Lang LaSalle, now works with Mayor Bloomberg to keep NYC on top. His unique skill set combines his real estate experience with a comprehensive understanding of technology, automation and innovation as it applies to our industry.
The Commissioner will showcase the various real estate projects and initiatives in the New York City area that clearly demonstrate this region’s understanding of the potential of technology, automation and innovation. An example of this innovation includes: “The Development Hub,” a state-of-the-art facility that will allow for electronic submission of digital construction plans, virtual plan reviews and inter-agency collaboration.
Commissioner LiMandri will discuss this initiative as well as others that clearly demonstrate New York City’s commitment to moving FAST FORWARD – in their continual efforts to Transform Real Estate Operations through Technology, Automation and Innovation!

Achieving Organizational Alignment through Technology, Automation and Innovation - Seven CBRE Executives Speak Out! (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 8:00AM - 10:30AM Location: Paradise North
Historically, the businesses processes associated with buildings have been managed by different departments with occasional overlap and need for interaction. As technology has advanced at lightening speed, the resultant automated business processes are redefining departmental responsibilities and rewriting workflow. This also means that the workflow often straddles different departments and teams have to communicate aggressively as they rewrite the operational handbook. Today, neither the technology nor the costs are proving to be the inhibitors to transformational automation projects, but rather the people.

CBRE will take center stage in the combined Realcomm and IBcon General Session to have a spirited discussion on the importance of Organizational Re-Alignment as influenced by technology, automation and innovation. It is very rare to see executives from one company, representing seven different business functions, on one stage, to discuss as a group, the strategic and transformational impacts that automation can have on a real estate organization.

Track: PROCESS AUTOMATION - Driving Efficiency and Transparency in Operations
Each year we see general improvements in the various applications that are used to manage complex real estate operations. The base applications get better and become more integrated while new solutions continue to challenge those processes that remain unorganized. It is critical to understand each process as well as its relationship with the overall information strategy. This track will focus on those business applications that are essential for running a 21st century real estate firm.
Included sessions are:
Budgeting & Forecasting - A Status Report (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 11:15AM - 12:30PM Location: Pavilion 6
At the heart of a successful real estate operation is an effective budgeting and forecasting platform. While this remains one of the top priorities for a real estate firm, it continues to be one of the most elusive. There are a number of issues that take priority with regards to budget and forecasting, integrating with other real estate solutions, migrating from one platform to another, establishing a "real time" option, and encouraging access by business units. This session will attempt to uncover and discuss the timely topics centered on budget and forecasting solutions.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is one of those topics that is at the forefront of industry professionals. In the world of real estate, managing various relationships effectively and efficiently contributes greatly to success. Changing platforms, industry specific vs. modified general marketing programs, extensive application integration and the idea of overlaying social/business concepts on top of CRM, make this a complex issue. This session will feature current case studies for deploying CRM in a real estate organization.

Empowering the Business - Data Aggregation, Analytics and Visualization (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 3:15PM - 4:30PM Location: Pavilion 6
We've made some tremendous strides over the past three years when it comes to aggregating data from disparate systems, designing robust analytics engines and finally, visualizing the data. This is no small task but the benefits to those running the company are enormous. For this first time, we are genuinely beginning to see the business from an integrated, holistic and comprehensive viewpoint. Understanding the business at a granular level, while at the same time being able to envision the future, is becoming a reality. This session will address the next level of analytics and visualization for the real estate industry.

Electronic Fund Transfer - Will We Ever Get There? (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 4:45PM - 6:00PM Location: Pavilion 6
Realcomm has been discussing this topic for a long time and first wrote about it in the September 2004 Advisory. In that article, readers learned that the concept of having tenants pay their monthly rents/leases electronically was a practice that was being widely accepted around the world... except in the United States. Eight years later and the industry is still only at about 15-25% adoption. Given the extraordinary benefits - efficiency, productivity and transparency - there must be a reason for the slow adoption. This spirited session will attempt to get to the bottom of EFT once and for all.

E-Signatures - From Niche to Mainstream (more info)
Date: 6/14/2012 Time: 11:00AM - 12:15PM Location: Pavilion 6
The Digital Signature and Electronic Authentication Law, enacted in 1998, was the start of the movement to replace paper-based signatures with online alternatives. While progress has been slow, online giants such as eBay, Expedia and a host of smaller e-commerce sites have been doing significant business over the last 10 years with no signature required. As more real estate processes are automated (walk-throughs, simple leases), this topic will continue to gain importance in the real estate industry. This session will explore the use of digital signatures in our industry.

Track: ORGANIZATIONAL CHALLENGES - The People Part of IT
New technology is announced everyday that promises a better way in which to do things. Despite the claims of a better tomorrow, there are a number of people and management related issues that stand in the way of progress. In fact, in most cases the technology is not the reason for failure, people are. Achieving executive buy-in, justifying the cost for investment, finding and retaining good people, and integrating with the business are just some of the subjects which will be covered in this track.
Included sessions are:
IT Project Selection - Governing the Process (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 11:15AM - 12:30PM Location: Ballroom E
One of the best ways to determine the tactical or strategic direction of a real estate firm's IT strategy is to review its project plan. How an organization prioritizes its IT projects is a clear indication of the technological maturity of a firm. Are companies still knee deep in managing e-mail or on the way to automating the "business?" The IT project selection process is critical in helping a firm prioritize those items that will have a direct benefit to the business and the bottom line. This session will review the best practices for IT project selection and the governance that is required.

Building the Team - Creating a First Class IT Organization (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 1:15PM - 2:30PM Location: Ballroom E
Despite all the headlines and the fact that the country is still suffering from high unemployment, it seems that finding and retaining good technology professionals remains one of our industry’s major problems. The jobless rate in the tech sector is virtually non-existent and the real estate industry itself is suffering from a technical skills gap. When one considers the fast-changing technology and competition for technical talent from other industries, the picture gets worse. This session will focus on strategies for finding, securing, developing and retaining strong, committed and motivated IT professionals.

Driving Adoption - The Battle Continues (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 3:00PM - 4:15PM Location: Ballroom E
One of the most common debates involving technology is about driving adoption. Anytime a new idea is introduced that disrupts the habits of people, resistance will be met. Technology is finding its way into every department of a real estate organization, and right behind it is a fair amount of hard work when it comes to changing processes and culture that have developed over a long period of time. Perceptive change management and understanding people are critical. This session will cover the topic of driving adoption from the front line staff all the way to the executive suite.

Build vs. Buy vs. Cloud - Should Real Estate Companies Be Developing Software? (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 4:45PM - 6:00PM Location: Ballroom E
For as long as software has been in existence, a platform inevitably comes along that allow companies to develop their own solutions. From word processing macros to Lotus Notes to SharePoint, the temptation is great. Software developers not moving fast enough or being too generic are some of the reasons for the do-it-yourself approach. Along with the benefits of fast moving, firm specific and sometimes lower cost solutions, comes a host of other problems such as ongoing support, upgrades and human resources. This session will present all sides of this controversial topic.

There are a great number of business processes found in a real estate firm. From lease management to building inspections, there is an inordinate amount of information to be collected, organized and managed. Given the breadth and complexity of the enterprise, it is important to have an overall core strategy for processing all the disparate data. This track will deal with the big issues associated with implementing a comprehensive real estate information management strategy.
Included sessions are:

Designing The Overall Information System Architecture - Defining the Master Plan (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 1:30PM - 2:45PM Location: Ballroom D
Fifteen years ago, all you had to worry about was a financial system and a new thing called e-mail. Today, with hundreds of potential business processes that must be automated in a real estate firm, the potential for multiple versions of the truth, duplication of efforts and disconnected data, are endless. Today more than ever, it is critical to have a comprehensive, integrated, well thought out architecture strategy. Architecture can include: network, hardware, software and data, all of which can be impacted by virtualization and cloud computing. This session starts at 100,000 feet.

The Future of ERPs - Leading Vendors Roadmap Review (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 4:45PM - 6:00PM Location: Ballroom D
Our industry, like many others, relies on a relatively small number of vendors to provide key automated solutions. While some are seasoned veterans, others are newer to the industry. In many respects, the future of real estate operations rests in their hands and understanding what they are thinking is critical to planning an information management strategy. This session will showcase the industry's top vendors and will provide an opportunity for them to present their product roadmaps and predictions on what the industry and solutions might look like in ten years.

Cloud Computing - The Conversation Goes Deeper (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 11:15AM - 12:30PM Location: Pavilion 9
For the past 36 months, cloud computing has been one of the most consistent discussions in our industry. Each year, it makes its way to the top of requested topics. The difference between three years ago and today is that we have moved from theory to slow and continuous adoption. Now that we have moved beyond early adoption, new issues such as data integration, application development, security and data privacy to negotiating cloud contracts have emerged. This session will dive deeper into the issues associated with cloud computing.

Enterprise Social Networks - Internal Collaboration Platforms Emerge (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 1:45PM - 3:00PM Location: Pavilion 9
Just when we thought we had a handle on internal communications platforms for employees, partners and clients, a new force is emerging: the "Enterprise Social Network." This platform allows individuals to work in a real time environment on almost any issue from HR policy to the status of a vacant space. While the opportunities might seem endless, the potential for mass confusion and wasted time is ever present. While companies like Yammer, SalesForce and other 60+ competitors are promising to save the day, what is the best strategy? This session will explore both the pros and cons of this emerging trend.

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Arrive (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 3:30PM - 4:45PM Location: Pavilion 9
Once only a luxury for the well-heeled and well-prepared, disaster recovery and business continuity are becoming a mainstay of IT planning. The stakes are just too high for this important part of an IT strategy to be ignored any longer. While some strategies are comprehensive and complex, others are more basic. Simply backing up data or making sure the organization is 100% functional after a critical event, are just two examples of the range of options in a business continuity plan. This session will feature case studies from throughout the industry on this very important topic.

Track: REAL ESTATE MOBILITY - Good Information on the Run
The iPad has been out for about two years and although it was developed with the consumer in mind, it has had a profound impact on the real estate industry. We have become used to accessing relevant information while on the move; requiring someone to go back to the office to retrieve data is becoming less of an option. The developments that have occurred in just the last 6 months are extraordinary and this track will discuss and debate all aspects of mobility related to a real estate firm.
Included sessions are:
Consumerization of Technology - How Can IT Keep Up? (more info)
Date: 6/14/2012 Time: 11:00AM - 12:15PM Location: Ballroom F
Tablet computers have been around for more than tenyears, but certainly have become mainstream recently with the introduction of the iPad. During this same time, smart phone usage exploded as well. Between the two, mobility is impacting every traditional business model. The pace, scale and sophistication of consumer technology is forcing IT executives to deal with an onslaught of requests from the property manager to the CEO. This session will examine this pace and scope and suggest strategies for integrating them into an IT plan.

Securing the Mobile Enterprise - The Topic Goes Wider and Deeper (more info)
Date: 6/14/2012 Time: 3:00PM - 4:00PM Location: Ballroom F
Not long ago mobile phones were just that... phones. Now mobile devices have become powerful little computers with functionalities that increase daily. Such capabilities create the desire to add more and more relevant business information for real estate professionals on the run. While the benefits are great, the downside risks need to be considered. With companies' entire data warehouse exposed via mobile devices, the stakes are high. This session will discuss the security and management strategies required for complex mobile enterprises.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and others have permeated our personal and business lives. Not long ago, the threat was that without social media, your company would be irrelevant. Yet, there are still firms that have invested a great deal with no results and some skeptical companies that have done little in this area. Along with the promised benefits have come a slew of issues: privacy, liability, productivity and other related problems. With the debate heating up, there are new ideas and technologies to explore. This session will be a "status update" on everything regarding Real Estate Social Business.

Investment Management Vendor Roadmap: Yardi (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 11:30AM - 12:00PM Location: Pavilion 2
Over the past few years, there have been a number of significant changes in the vendor landscape, including changes of ownership and structure of some of the iconic industry providers. Some of these have resulted in new and improved product lines, but in some cases left the users questioning the level of commitment to existing products and service levels: “Which products will continue to be supported” and “Which new products will rise to the top?” In this closed-door, private session, attendees will have the opportunity to touch base with their major vendors to hear their vision for the future, discuss their roadmaps and ask the questions that are top of mind.

Self-Service BI and Analytics (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 12:45PM - 2:00PM Location: Pavilion 2
Many organizations are moving to self-managed business intelligence solutions. The ability for users to quickly access and analyze information as easily as a Google search is appealing from both a productivity and economic perspective. Self-service BI has enabled organizations to put the power of calculation in the hands of the folks who need it, when they need it with close to zero support from IT. This session will review some of the new tools, templates and how they’re being used to solve critical business challenges and offer guidelines on what to look out for to ensure getting the right information.

Investment Management Vendor Roadmap: MRI Software (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 2:00PM - 2:30PM Location: Pavilion 2
Over the past few years, there have been a number of significant changes in the vendor landscape, including changes of ownership and structure of some of the iconic industry providers. Some of these have resulted in new and improved product lines, but in some cases left the users questioning the level of commitment to existing products and service levels: “Which products will continue to be supported” and “Which new products will rise to the top?” In this closed-door, private session, attendees will have the opportunity to touch base with their major vendors to hear their vision for the future, discuss their roadmaps and ask the questions that are top of mind.

Budgeting and Forecasting – What’s On the Horizon? (more info)
Date: 6/13/2012 Time: 3:15PM - 4:30PM Location: Pavilion 2
With many approaches to the traditional task of property budgeting, most are still using “the old reliable” Excel-based solutions. Some are considering new applications that may offer interesting functions not available before, but these may be considered relatively ‘untested and unproven’ and therefore, a riskier choice. This session will offer the opportunity to interact with peers and discover what’s working, what doesn’t and share experiences on this important topic with other IT industry leaders.

Date: 6/14/2012 Time: 3:00PM - 4:15PM Location: Pavilion 2
Automating the management of real estate investment funds can run from a very simple model to a highly complex layering of legal agreements. Get it right and running a fund can be easy; get it wrong and it can be a costly nightmare. Where do you start when tasked with developing support for a fund? How do you gather the data needed for complex fund calculations? Which approaches are the best fit for different models of fund operation? What are the major challenges you can expect to face when working in this space? This inaugural session will provide a forum to define the major IT issues in this space, address what approaches have been used before and to lay the groundwork for future in-depth sharing of methods and solutions.
